Leadership Mindset 2.0 Freed Me From All Of This And Empowered My Leadership Capabilities
Here’s what my life used to look like (and if you’ve ever led a team or were a manager, then I’m sure you can relate)…

I call this the “Leadership Incompetence Trap,” and almost ALL of us go through this in our first leadership experience:
  Step 1 - Move into Leadership:
We had been doing great at our individual role and we finally earned our way into a true leadership position by either getting promoted or starting and growing a business of our own.

We’re a bit nervous, but we’re mostly excited to finally get our chance to be the leader and do all the things we feel our own leaders could have or should have done.
  Step 2 - Harsh Realization:
We quickly find out that what made us a great doer - hard working, focused, skilled - does NOT translate into leading people.

Now we need to motivate and inspire, shape a culture, provide strategy, find answers to unexpected problems outside our wheelhouse, AND make all the final decisions...

Even when we don’t have all the information and all of which is new to us.

This is where the self-doubt and imposter syndrome can start to eat away at our confidence as our negative self-talk gets louder and louder. 

We embrace the “fake it 'til you make it” and try to ride out the “adjustment period”.

In the meantime, we try to make up for it by going back to what we know - doing. We jump in as the hero and try to help by doing as much as we can ourselves.
  Step 3 - Cracks Starting Already:
As we see the signs of trouble on the horizon we get that nagging feeling that our team doesn’t respect us, that they doubt us or think we aren’t up to the task. 

The stress, overwhelm and overwork are running the show now, but we’re STILL in danger of failing to meet our goals or are already falling behind.

Worst of all, we don’t have a plan we fully believe will work. 

Imposter syndrome overwhelms us as we begin to feel like we’re making everything up and grasping at straws.
  Step 4 - The Constant Drag of Fear:
We know we need to get things in shape, and quick, so we find ourselves working more hours and micromanaging every little thing. 

All while the pressure we’re under is building and building.

We notice that we’re having problems falling asleep, staying asleep, staying focused on anything except our problems. 

On top of that, we’re constantly in a bad mood and snapping at everything.

So, in a blow to our soul, our family or friends might even start avoiding us or telling us we’re too grumpy, tired, or angry to enjoy being around.
  Step 5 - Your Worst Fear Realized:
Our team - and by default, us - are failing. We’re missing targets, our A-players are just going through the motions or bailing, and everyone can see it. 

Team morale, respect, and engagement have bottomed out and burnout begins.

Our peers and people above us - our boss / investors / partners / the board - put us on notice

We feel lost and alone and have no idea where to go from here. 
  Step 6 - The Precipice of No Return:
Because we don’t know what else to do and we feel like asking for help will reveal us as imposters, we just keep trying the same things and spiraling further and further down.

Until finally, our confidence is shot, we’re burned out, our health and family life is likely a mess...

And we may even get removed from our position - fired or reassigned - or be forced to close the business.

We feel like we had our one shot and we blew it. 

We feel like a failure, empty, and like we’ve let everyone down - our team, our peers, and even our family. Our ambitions as a leader crumble, and you move into “survival” mode.

At this stage, many of us decide we aren’t cut out for leadership and stop pursuing our dreams. 

Instead of failing, we see ourselves as failures - and we return to playing small.
The Leadership Incompetence Trap not only sucks…

It kept my company stuck at the same revenue level for 3 years straight - absolutely no growth.

This forced me to wonder if I was even cut out for leadership - teetering on the precipice of no return.

After all, I was working my butt off, giving more than I ever had before, only to find sales stagnating and profits SHRINKING.

To be honest…

I almost gave up on the whole idea of being a leader.

I was so sure that I just wasn’t “leadership material” or that I didn’t “have what it takes”...

That I genuinely considered selling the business and going back to being a programmer instead, even though that had never satisfied me before.

But before I gave up…

I wanted to try one last thing, now that I had nothing else to lose.

Something radically different that - if it worked - would change everything.

And as you're about to find out, what I tried…

DID work...

Then I spent years turning it into a simple, repeatable system that ANYONE could use...

While I’m proud of everything I’ve accomplished, I’m still just a regular guy at heart with my own strengths, weaknesses, flaws, and blind spots like everyone else.

I’m just a little further on this particular journey now.

But these days, I’m grateful to say my life IS pretty amazing…

A couple of years ago I met a lovely British woman and now live near London with our son.

And for work I get to teach the top leaders in the world how to become more successful in business…and in life.

Recently I’ve been to Panama, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Finland, and all over the US and the UK working with leaders around the globe to help them be more authentic, effective, and HAPPY in their roles.

Last month, I finally sold my third software company and now I’m focused on helping leaders full time.

(Though I still love geeking out with my Playstation 5…)
As We Get To Know Each Other You’ll Quickly Realize That Today I’m One Of The Luckiest People On Earth - So Let’s Talk About Where I Was On April 1st, 2008
I was 38 and living in California…

I was the founder and CEO of Radiant Technologies, an ERP reseller of SAP and Microsoft Dynamics which had grown by 10x per year (or more) our first few years in business without any outside investment…

And one of the Microsoft execs at the time told me he had never seen a company grow so fast in his entire 30 year career.

But I STILL felt like a massive fraud.

Because even though we had some quick success by filling a gap in the marketplace, the culture sucked.

I knew we were succeeding in spite of ourselves, not because of my leadership or vision.

So I felt like I was winging it, barely hanging on.

And I was so stressed, fearing everything was about to come crashing down, that my main focus was just getting through each day with myself and the business in (mostly) one piece.

My employees, while they “liked” me, didn’t see or respect me as a leader.

I was just “the boss”, for better or for worse.

We weren’t strategic, responsive, or intentional as a business… we were just muddling along, reacting to whatever problem came up next and surviving as best we could.

Which is why while we were technically doing well enough in certain ways…

We were failing, stagnating, and on the verge of collapsing in all the others.

To top it all off, outside the office, I had developed substance abuse issues and was going through a divorce - not a good situation.

I tried doing what I would normally do in tough situations - work harder and harder.
But I Quickly Found Out That In Leadership, You Can’t “Outwork The Problem.” 
I felt lost and alone and didn’t know where to turn.

So even though it had always been my dream to run a business, I truly thought about letting it all go.

I gave it everything I had.

I gave it my BEST shot.

And it didn’t work.

Because I played by the rules and I did everything “right”...
Here I Was Finally Owning and Leading The Business I Worked So Hard To Build -
And I Absolutely Hated It…
I hated it because the stress, workload, and pressure was killing me - and not just metaphorically.

Because I was reaching my goals, dreams and aspirations by sacrificing everything else I had to do it…

And now that I was finally where I had wanted to be for so long…

Now that I’d given up everything else to do it…

It was STILL slipping away through my fingers.

And this time, I couldn’t “outwork the problem” or sacrifice more - I didn’t have anything more to give.

So I did what everyone else out there does in this situation…

I started looking for a way out of this mess.

In fact, I became OBSESSED with it.

I looked everywhere...

Spent entire days, weekends, all my spare time...

And after a few months of obsessive searching...

I finally found it.

I stumbled upon a group of business leaders talking about how they were consistently hitting their goals at work even while they were hardly in the office at all.

They seemed so in control and confident

They were authentic and comfortable with themselves, and when I met people from their teams it was clear how highly they were respected

Even though they weren’t “working hard in the trenches” all the time like I was.

In fact their teams were so engaged, self-motivated, and high-performing that their companies continued growing consistently, month after month, year after year.

I couldn’t help but feel the sharp pang of envy every time I saw them.

But what really stood out to me…

Was how they were still living their own lives OUTSIDE their leadership role - they were travelling, they were growing families, they were in the best shape of their lives…

They had time to keep learning and growing in all kinds of ways…

They were doing exactly what I was trying to do - and what I had been so EXCITED to do as a leader - but they were doing it SUCCESSFULLY.

My first instinct was to disqualify myself: clearly they were different, or better, than me in some way…

More suited for these roles, or “natural-born leaders.”

But as I got to know them more, observed them more…

It became clear that most of them were just like me.

They also started out just as regular people, with drive and focus, who worked their way up to a leadership position.

They also felt nervous and anxious as they took on new responsibilities…

The ONLY difference was they had this deep belief in themselves and their team to weather and figure out anything.

It wasn’t arrogance, it was just a natural kind of confidence and self-esteem.

So they didn’t try to force themselves or their leadership to look a certain way…

And more importantly...

They weren’t afraid to set the boundaries they needed...

Ask for the help and input of their team to meet the goals of the business...

Or TRUST their teams to perform without trying to jump in and “save them” or micromanage them in any way.

Because the boss has to constantly assert their superiority in order to feel like they are doing something of value in the business…

So their teams are wasting time and energy working around that ego...

Instead of just WORKING.

This is how bosses protect their self-worth and reinforce that they are “needed” for the business’s success.

They are outsourcing their sense of self-esteem and worth as a leader, by basing it on how others react and respond to them (i.e. by doing what they say)...

Which costs them, their team, and the business A LOT productivity, problem solving energy, and creative ideas that could have created growth for the business instead.

And by focusing on this strategy - they spend a ton of time on..
  • Micromanaging their team to death
  • Playing politics to try and make themselves look good
  • Keeping all the information and control to themselves
  • Trying to seem as they are always in control and on top of things
  • Inserting themselves into projects, meetings, and conversations
  • Taking credit for their team’s hard work
All of this requires time and energy - A LOT of it.

But the problem isn't the people themselves - though their behavior IS a problem - it's the fact that they don’t know any better…

It’s the fact that THEIR bosses are leading in this way, and the effect is trickling down.

And because of that, they are taught to be driven by fear and ego

They are forced to spend THEIR energy defending and protecting themselves

Rather than providing for, supporting, and truly leading others.
